Tadeusz Kulisiewicz: Succinct Beauty

Nov 19, 2022 - Mar 05, 2023

The Tadeusz Kulisiewicz monographic exhibition presents a unique selection of the artist鈥檚 works 鈥 drawings and prints 鈥 never before shown in one common space. The exhibition will feature works from galleries and museums such as the National Museum in Warsaw, the Asia-Pacific Museum and Zach臋ta 鈥 National Gallery of Art, but also from the Museum of the Polish Army and the Museum of Warsaw. A significant part of the exhibition will be works from the private collections of Leonard and Wanda Pietraszak, Jacek Kudelski, as well as Jacek 艁ozowski. An extensive selection of drawings, prints and sketches created throughout the artist鈥檚 life will be on display. There will also be works from the artist鈥檚 numerous travels to China, India, South America and Cuba.

The substantive axis of the exhibition will be an attempt to show the process of development of Tadeusz Kulisiewicz鈥檚 original drawing language 鈥 from the woodcuts of the artistically momentous Szlembark series and the pre-war dry-etchings, sanguine and pencil drawings, to the concise linear drawings made primarily with pen and ink on paper, sometimes enriched with watercolours. The revelation of the multiplicity of stylistic and thematic contexts will make it possible to understand the significance of the different stages of the creative path for the development of an original language of concise linearism with surprising formal and expressive richness and, in the context of all Western art, a unique artistic quality.

The exhibition will be enriched with a broad historical and cultural context: extensive archival documentation, press and books, theatre and film stills and documentaries.

It will be accompanied by a lavishly illustrated catalogue with reproductions of the artist鈥檚 most interesting and important works, including texts by Dr Janusz Janowski, Jacek Kudelski, Dr Anna Manicka and a memoir by the artist鈥檚 friends, Wanda and Leonard Pietraszak, as well as a timeline compiled by Zuzanna S臋kowska. It will also recall the statements of eminent art and cultural theorists discussing Kulisiewicz.
