The Book Show

School of Visual Arts (SVA) 鈥淭he Book Show,鈥 an exhibition from the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay class of 2023, curated by Anna Raff. The exhibition will be on view Thursday, December 1, 2022 through Saturday, January 14, 2023, at the SVA Gramercy Gallery, 209 East 23rd Street, New York City.

First-year MFA candidates of the Illustration as Visual Essay program are tasked with creating books in a format of their choice, whether it be illustrated poetry, graphic novel, children鈥檚 book or essay. The works in this year鈥檚 edition of 鈥淭he Book Show鈥 encompass a variety of themes鈥攁mong them narrative fantasy, commentaries on our present day reemergence into public spaces, reconsiderations of times past and advancement into unknown futures.

Notably, the class of 2023 was the last to be taught by the program's founder and chair Marshall Arisman, who died in April of 2022 at the age of 83. Their work reflects his sage wisdom, kindness and generosity, which guided decades of students as they forged their way into the world while building a vast community of illustrators. It is in this spirit and with gratitude that the exhibition is dedicated to him.
