The Essence of Existence

Jan 06, 2023 - Feb 18, 2023
The Essence of Existence attempts to perceive the transcendental experience in the medium of artworks and explore the form and the essence of contemporary art. Five artists are invited to the exhibition: Kazuhiro ITO ( b. 1972 ), Marefumi KOMURA ( b.1977 ), Satoshi OHNO ( b. 1980 ), Martin GALLE ( b.1981 ), and Chien-Chiang HUA ( b.1975 ), each of whom is the expert in different art fields.

From bronze sculptures, oil paintings, and acrylic paintings to ink and acrylic on cotton, the artists鈥 philosophy of creation regarding Existentialism is examined via various art forms and media. Japanese artist, Kazuhiro ITO ( b. 1972 ), adopts bronze as the main material for his sculptures. He merges the trait of inevitability and contingency of bronze to create his own technique which preserves the concave and convex texture of the material as the trace of the brush stroke from common oil paintings. Looking at Marefumi KOMURA鈥檚 ( b.1977 ) works, they are easily reminiscent of Francis Bacon鈥檚 ( b.1909-1992 ) tortured faces; however, KOMURA refocuses on timeless themes such as 鈥渇ragility and depicts the so-called 鈥渂eauty鈥 hidden beneath human鈥檚 heart. Satoshi OHNO ( b. 1980 ) was born in Gifu, Japan. The primeval forests in nature inspire him to create pieces with iconic colors and genderless portraits from his observations and experiences. Martin GALLE ( b.1981 ) was a student of Neo Rauch ( b.1960 ), the master of the Leipzig School. He adds abstract color patches on his realism paintings to express the essence of disappearing paradox. The Taiwanese artist Chien Chiang HUA鈥檚 ( b.1975 ) Experience Cycling illustrates the extreme challenges of such physical training. The journey goes from curiosity, struggle, and exhaustion to regaining the courage in order to overcome the difficulties.
