Galerie St. Etienne, which helped introduce the US to Austrian and German Expressionism, turned 80 this year, and has celebrated with a trio of exhibitions. The final show revisits the challenges faced by founder Otto Kallir given anti-German sentiment during and following World War II, and his dedication to artists such as
Gustav Klimt,
Oskar Kokoschka,
Paula Modersohn-Becker, and
Egon Schiele, all of whom had their first US solo shows with the gallery. Drawing from private collections and the holdings of international museums, the current exhibition features some of the important works sold by Kallir during those years.
