The Purpose of Photography: A Permanent Invention

Apr 20, 2011 - Jun 19, 2011
We are living in an age where the possibilities offered by photography have increased exponentially. Traditional processes, which are still often poorly understood, are being superseded by digital or hybrid technologies which are hard for the general public to grasp. While photography today is rediscovering alternative traditional methods, it has become urgent to analyse the technical knowledge that enables us to understand the exact nature of photographic works from both past and present.

The exhibition entitled "L'objet photographique: une invention permanente" looks at photographic methods (contact, pinhole, photographic lens, etc) and the means of processing or modifying the resulting images (direct positives, negatives, prints, etc) which make up the material history of photography. Visitors to this exhibition, which features both historic and contemporary works and which also focuses on the photographer's studio, will be quite right in thinking that every photographic object is unique.
