The cool Look: Graphik Art of the New Objectivity
The cool Look // The term "Neue Sachlichkeit" or New Objectivity was coined by then-Director Gustav Hartlaub in 1925 for an exhibition of the same name at the Kunsthalle Mannheim. Artists of the emerging movement, such as Otto Dix and George Grosz, wanted to stand apart from the Expressionists and their idiosyncratic, expressive colours and shapes. Instead they sought naturalistic and veristic presentations of form. Artists like Alexander Kanoldt and Georg Schrimpf preferred aloof, factual representations. Landscapes and political themes played significant roles in the movement, as did starkly honest portraits.
The exhibition features prominent exponents of New Objectivity represented in the Kunsthalle's Prints and Drawings collection, such as Conrad Felix M眉ller, Karl Hubbuch, Rudolf Schlichter, Alexander Kanoldt and Xaver Fuhr.
