Thomas Bayrle Un sacco di autostrada... / freewaybags... / car... jam Thomas Bayrle makes drawings, photocopies, collages and animated films using geometrical motifs taken from everyday images and used to generate superstructures. Cups, beer cans, shoes, faces and found images are accumulated to form dizzyingly kaleidoscopic shapes. Cars, freeways and public spaces are other recurring elements of his visual grammar, while repetition of his motifs gives rise to a "Superform" whose individual components retain their independence of the whole.
Bayrle's work is frankly political, homing in on mass phenomena and indexing the individual's relationship with society. Born in Berlin in 1937. Lives and works in Frankfurt. Thomas Bayrle has been exhibiting all over the world since the 1960s, notably at Documenta III and IV. He contributed to the Berlin Biennial in 2006 and the Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art in 2007. Also in 2007, Frac Limousin invited him for a solo exhibition and published a catalogue.
Stéphane Dafflon UP/DOWN Stéphane Dafflon produces rigorously geometrical canvases which dialogue freely with their ambient space. Initially he works with industrial design software, then transforms the results into acrylic canvases or wallpaintings. From design he takes techniques, tools, models and, most of all, ways of making his forms effective in the real world. "In restoring to abstract art the resources of a field - design - which had largely absorbed them, Stéphane Dafflon at the same time reinstates one of abstraction's founding ambitions: to act on the spectator and thus ask him to act, in turn, on the world." (Lionel Bovier, Cahier d'Artistes series, 2006) Born in 1972 in Neyruz, Switzerland. Lives and works in Lausanne. Stéphane Dafflon's recent exhibitions include two solo shows at Frac Aquitaine (Bordeaux, 2007) and Frac des Pays de la Loire (Carquefou, 2006). He has also taken part in many group exhibitions, among them Stéphane Dafflon/Jim Isermann/Olivier Mosset , Le Spot (Le Havre, 2007), Big City Lab , 11. ART FORUM BERLIN, Messe Berlin (2006) and The Poetics of Space (Whanki Museum, Seoul, 2006). He will be participating in "Downtown", the next Le Havre Biennial, scheduled for 7-30 June 2008.
