You are The Company in Which You Keep
The exhibition spans two major venues over 10,000sq feet, at Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art and Sunderland Museum. At Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art 20 artists investigate how our twenty-first century world works: what powers it, what power structures determine our place in it, and how our still new century differs from that of our recent predecessors. At Sunderland Museum, we are asked to reimagine the history of recent photography in terms of its accepted genres and modes of working, as much as to reimagine our recent social history. The exhibition includes revisionist views of canonical bodies of work by leading figures in the field from Martin Parr, Nigel Henderson and Paul Graham, alongside bodies of work by significantly under-rated figures such as Bob Jardine, as well as brand new work by exciting younger figures such as Tim Mitchell and Christina Middel.
The exhibition also includes several major new commissions by emerging artists including Stuart Whipps and Craig Ames. It features the UK premieres of works by international artists including Ulf Aminde, Reynold Reynolds and Nick Crowe & Ian Rawlinson.
Craig Ames, Ulf Aminde, Haley Austin, Natasha Caruana, Nick Crowe & Ian Rawlinson, Melanie Friend, Gilbert & George, Julian Germain, Paul Graham, Chris Harrison, Nigel Henderson, Jeremy Hutchison, Yee I-Lann, Bob Jardine, James O Jenkins, Linder, Melanie Manchot, Daniel Meadows, Gustav Metzger, Tim Mitchell, Martin Parr, Reynold Reynolds, Reynold Reynolds with Patrick Jolley, Simon Roberts, Thiago Rocha Pitta, Daniele Sambo, Jo Spence, John Stezaker, Homer Sykes, Stuart Whipps
