The unusual title, A Q & I, differs significantly from the exhibition鈥檚 Japanese title. Each of the four evenly spaced letters and symbols has its own meaning, but together, their significance is amplified. 鈥淎鈥� is the first letter of the artist鈥檚 family name, Amemiya. The sound of the letter 鈥淨鈥� is present in the Japanese title, and it can also be the shortened form of the word 鈥淨uestion.鈥� 鈥�&鈥� is a conjunction, equivalent to the hiragana letter 鈥溿仺鈥� in the Japanese title. And, of course, the last letter 鈥淚鈥� indicates 鈥渢he self.鈥� All in all, perhaps an expanded version of the title would be 鈥淎memiya Question and I.鈥� The 鈥淨uestion鈥� that sits between the artist鈥檚 name and 鈥渢he self鈥� suggests a concept explored by Amemiya: 鈥渢o cross a border before you know it.鈥� The title promises that the exhibition will be full of new wonders that are reshaped through scrutinizing, questioning, and examining our mysterious world.
