cosmos: other cartographies

Feb 06, 2025 - Mar 15, 2025

Nara Roesler S茫o Paulo is pleased to present cosmos - other cartographies, a group exhibition curated by artist Laura Vinci in collaboration with Nara Roesler鈥檚 curatorial project. The exhibition brings together around 30 works by 22 artists who, despite their distinct poetic approaches, converge on the theme of cartography. Cartography, a field of knowledge that produces graphic representations of a given space, has historically engaged deeply with art, religion, and various systems of belief and mythology. By looking at maps as ideas of world representation, but also as tools widely used for the control and exploitation of colonized territories, the exhibition aims to gather works that rethink and subvert these representations.

Among the historically significant names in the show are works by Anna Bella Geiger, Nelson Leirner, and Paulo Bruscky, which approach graphic representation from a poetic perspective, addressing national issues while also delving into broader geopolitics. The materiality of cartography appears in the works of Andr茅 Vargas, Marina Camargo, and Carlos Bunga, who construct (or perceive) maps and drawings through unconventional media. Political themes, such as disputes over narratives and colonialism, are present in works by Alfredo Jaar, Jonathas de Andrade, Jaime Lauriano, and Talles Lopes.

In Laura Vinci's words, the exhibition's focus arises 鈥渇rom the various crises our planet currently faces鈥攚hether political, migratory, or environmental鈥攁nd the exhibition's goal is to inspire reflection on different artistic approaches to these urgent issues. For the artists, 鈥榯hinking about the world鈥 does not necessarily mean philosophizing, but rather creating images, objects, representations, and interventions that engage with these global ideas. Some works may take a more political or geopolitical perspective, while others may emphasize environmental concerns. Together, the works will foster a broader dialogue about the world we live in.鈥
