Tate St. Ives

St. Ives | UK

Home of post-war British Modernism, St Ives provides the artistic foundations for Tate St Ives. The gallery was built to celebrate the Modernists as well as the surroundings and atmosphere that inspired them, its unique architecture recalls the White Relief works of the artist Ben Nicholson, as well as the unexpected twists and turns of the town of St Ives itself.

Tate St Ives opened in 1993, on a spectacular site overlooking Porthmeor Beach, and has a lively and varied international exhibition programme, with three seasons of exhibitions each year. A selection of works from the St Ives Modernists (who were seen as being at the forefront of British Modernism) is always on display, including such artists as Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Naum Gabo, Peter Lanyon, Patrick Heron, Terry Frost and Sandra Blow. The main exhibition shows major figures in British and international contemporary art, and our regular programme changes ensure that if you visit more than once a year you will see something different every time. Tate St Ives offers daily Free Talks Monday – Saturday. Extra free talks take place at Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum during holiday and ‘special’ periods. Specialist Talks at Tate St Ives are designed to complement our current exhibitions and feature internationally renowned artists, art critics, art historians, curators and cultural commentators. Specialist talks and panel discussions last 1 – 1.5 hours and are followed by open discussion. There is always something for families to do at the Gallery. Activity packs, interactive talks and a friendly staff team ensure that Tate St Ives provides ways for children and adults to explore the exhibitions together.
