Akyavas Masterpiece Leads Bonhams First Modern and Contemporary Turkish Sale

A highly important painting by the Turkish Master Erol Akyavas entitled 'End of Encounter', leads Bonhams first Turkish Modern and Contemporary Sale in London on 5 April.

Akyavas Masterpiece Leads Bonhams First Modern and Contemporary Turkish Sale
A highly important painting by the Turkish Master Erol Akyavas entitled 'End of Encounter', leads Bonhams first Turkish Modern and Contemporary Sale in London on 5 April.聽

The diptych, in pencil, acrylic, oil and mixed media on canvas, dates from 1982 and features in the definitive guide to Akyavas's work, Erol Akyavas: His Life and Works, by Dostoglu, Haldun and Beral Madra. It is estimated at between 拢280,000-340,000.聽

The Head of Bonhams Turkish Art Department, Mehreen Rizvi said, "We're very excited to be offering such an important work in our first venture into Turkish Modern and Contemporary Art. The sale as a whole covers the field and shows the great variety which this wonderful culture has to offer."聽

Akyavas is just one of several major artists in a sale which spans the history of Turkish modern and contemporary art.聽

From the post-war period Abidin Eldero臒lu's Yuva (Home) of 1962 is estimated at 拢40,000-60,000 and Fikret Mualla's Football Players at 拢15,000-20,000.聽

Leading Turkish contemporary artists whose works appear in the sale include Burhan Dogancay who is represented by 'Roaming Alexander' of 1977, one of his influential Alexander Walls series (estimated 拢70,000-90,000). Other works from the series are housed in the permanent collections of the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. Bedri Baykam also features with two major works, 'La Bohemia of Christiania (Hans Jaeger and the Others)' 拢30,000-50,000 and 'La Sirene (The Mermaid)' at 拢30,000-50,000.聽

Alongside these and other established names, the auction will also be offering works by a number of Turkey's rising artists such as Selma G眉rb眉z (born 1960) with The Poet, (拢32,000-36,000, Kezban Arca Batibeki (born 1956) with Dark Red II 拢15,000-20,000, Fatma Tulin (born 1949) with Yellow Pain, from 1992 (拢22,000-26,000) and Ismet Dogan (born 1957) with Orientalist a mixed media piece, acrylic on black and white photograph, convex mirror, mounted on wood (拢14,000-18,000). The controversial artist Sukran Moral (born 1962) is also represented by two works including Despair (拢12,000-16,000).
