Gert & Uwe Tobias are twin brothers, born in Brasov, Romania in 1973. Known for their large-scale woodcuts and sculptural constructions, the artists draw on the dark mythologies and history of their native Transylvania as their subject, bringing age-old folktales and imagery into the realm of the present. Images that figure prominently in the prints and sculptures include not only skulls and monsters, but also modern graphic design, ancient ceramic forms, camp Hollywood horror ï¬lms, and abstract imagery. Gert & Uwe Tobias' work has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries worldwide, notably a solo show at Hammer Museum, Los Angeles September 2006 - January 2007 and the Kunstverein Heilbronn. Recent group exhibitions include Künstlerbrüder at Haus der Kunst, Munich, which traveled to the Palais des Beaux Arts, Brussels; as well as those at Team Gallery, New York, and Sprüth Magers Lee, London. A further project room show is planned for the the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 2008. Gert & Uwe Tobias are represented by CFA , Berlin, Rodolphe Janssen , Brussels, and Maureen Paley , London.
