10 Years On : Liao Chi-Chun Oil Painting Awards

16 Apr, 2011 - 12 Jun, 2011
The Liao Chi-Chun Oil Painting Award, established in memory of the late Taiwanese artist Liao Chi-Chun, is given to encourage and recognize young artists with outstanding achievements and proven potential for continued high-level original art and research. Liao dedicated his life to sharing art and elevating culture. To keep those ideals alive, in 1996 his son, Liao Shu-wen, donated his father鈥檚 works to the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, establishing in 1998 the Board of Directors for Liao Chi-Chun Fund of Taipei Culture Foundation to oversee the use of interest on the fund toward sponsorship of the arts.

Since 2000, the annual Liao Chi-Chun Oil Painting Award has honored a total of ten excellent artists. In the first year, the award was given to two artists, Chu You-Yi and Hung Tien-Yu. Awardees from the second to ninth years were Lu Hsien-Ming, ABUGY, Liu Kuo-Cheng, Kuo Wei-Kuo, Chen Meng-Tze, Lin Chin-Hsien, Tang Jo-Hung and Chen Dian-Mao. These ten artists have been invited to participate in this year's exhibition to carry forward Mr. Liao Chi-Chun's creative spirit as well as present their own artistic styles. The exhibition will include awarded artworks from the past along with each artist's latest creations, as well as seven works by Liao Chi-Chun from the museum's collection. It is hoped that presenting these works together will give audience members an opportunity to appreciate the spirit of the award. Also on display will be promotional materials, including photographs, brochures and introductory essays collected from exhibitions over the entire ten-year span of the award, as well as other exhibition catalogs for the various artists, providing an opportunity for visitors to explore more deeply the evolution of the award and each awardee鈥檚 artistic style.
