ATELIER AKI: Here and Beyond Part I
Since its founding in 2010, Atelier Aki has consistently shaped new directions in contemporary art, offering a distinct voice within an ever-evolving global art landscape. With a sustained commitment to discovering and nurturing artists, the gallery has established a dynamic international presence, expanding beyond traditional exhibitions to engage in meaningful collaborations with leading institutions and brands such as Daum Kakao, Powerlong Museum (寶龍美術館)Hyundai Department Store, YES24, and TSUTAYA BOOKS. In parallel, the gallery has built a strong foundation in the global art scene by consistently participating in leading international art fairs, including Art Central Hong Kong, Art Miami, West Bund Art & Design, ART021 Shanghai, KIAF Seoul, and Art Jakarta, introducing promising talents to international audiences. Furthermore, ATELIER AKI has achieved tangible milestones by expanding its international reach and placing works in major collections, including the Shenyang Museum, the Shao Foundation (邵忠基金?) of Modern Media Holdings, the Anna Pao Sohmen Foundation, UOB Group, the PARKSEOBO Foundation, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Art Bank, and Hana Bank.
This year, ATELIER AKI celebrates its 15th anniversary with a special two-part exhibition titled "Here and Beyond", commemorating the gallery’s 15-year journey. Showcasing major works by artists who embody ATELIER AKI’s enduring discourse grounded in a ‘global perspective’ and the ‘spirit of the contemporary’, the exhibition serves as a defining milestone that bridges the gallery’s past and present while envisioning new directions for contemporary art. The title ‘Here and Beyond’ reflects both ATELIER AKI’s enduring legacy and its continuous pursuit of new horizons, contemplating the current state and future course of contemporary art.
This exhibition unfolds in two chapters, Part I and Part II, conceived not to simply juxtapose the ‘past and present’ with the ‘future ahead’, but to present each as two distinct stages that reveal their own depth and significance. This layered structure invites viewers to encounter contemporary art through a “dual perspective,” transcending a linear sense of time. Part I presents significant works by artists who have grown with the gallery and now hold established positions in the international art world, bearing witness to how Korean art has found resonance and recognition globally. Part II, in turn, introduces a new generation of artists who will embark on a journey with ATELIER AKI to shape the next chapter of Korean contemporary art, unfolding as a creative space where vision and imagination converge. In essence, while Part I reflects where we stand today, Part II asks what lies beyond, opening new possibilities for the future.
