Asad Raza: Plot

24 Mar, 2023 - 03 Sep, 2023

The process-oriented and interdisciplinary exhibition Plot by the artist Asad Raza (*1974 in Buffalo) stems from his site-specific installation Absorption. This work, that covers an entire floor of Museion, involves the creation of artificial 鈥渘eosoil鈥 from locally sourced materials, and cultivated by regional participants, who will offer it freely to museum visitors to take home. Absorption has always hosted interventions by other artists, and here in Bolzano, the piece undergoes successive metamorphoses. First, much of the neosoil is transformed into mud bricks which are used to create a structure designed by architects BB (Fabrizio Ballabio, Alessandro Bava) and artist Lydia Ourahmane to explore the process of habitation. This hybrid environment then becomes the setting for choreographer Moriah Evans鈥 first Italian presentation, in collaboration with Bolzano Danza. Finally, the bricks and other elements are remixed into fertile soil and given away.

With Plot, Museion explores new ground for experiential and collaborative practices of exhibition-making. By involving local cultivators, coordinators, and scientists it both draws on, and generates, transdisciplinary knowledge of the region. The title, which can be used to describe a piece of land, a (floor) plan, and the turns and twists of a narrative, alludes to the exhibition鈥檚 different conceptual dimensions. Like the plot of a novel, the exhibition evolves in different chapters. Each creates poetic and sensual encounters between natural, artificial, living and non-living entities, and a sense of porosity between bodies, architecture, and landscape.
