Autumnal Equinox: Moments in Repose

01 Oct, 2021 - 21 Oct, 2021
Agora Gallery is pleased to announce Autumnal Equinox: Moments in Repose, a group exhibition taking place between October 1 and 21. The show casts a reflective gaze on the incoming fall season, displaying paintings, drawings, and sculptures in a wide breadth of formats and styles. Shying away from the flashy exuberance of the summer months, eleven artists turn inward and seek the quiet comfort of the familiar. The tones become earthy, soft, appeasing; the atmosphere is dreamy, almost melancholy. Through various modes of expression, these artists reconcile their need for an intimate communion with the self. Brittany Clifford, Kim Hinkson, and Angela Schiappa engage in unbridled abstract compositions dripping with pathos. Vega Aramburu and John Britton offer graceful reinterpretations of classical painting traditions; reprising the themes of ukiyo-e and Islamic decoration. William Atkinson and Craig Freeman鈥檚 dynamic paintings are musings on the urban landscapes of Los Angeles and New York City; while Nora Pineda鈥檚 ceramics explore her passionate, deep-rooted relationship with her native Mexico. A poetic nostalgia is evoked by Ludwig Mannhalter鈥檚 oil paintings and Alejandro Miras鈥 watercolors of the streets of Barcelona. Lastly, Ai Wen Wu Kratz鈥 acrylic panels 鈥淔ive Sonnets鈥 provide the soundtrack for this autumnal mise-en-sc猫ne, with their elegant choreography of forms. Overall, there is a slowing down of tempo, as if to reclaim one鈥檚 own private space. A stronger sense of identity arises, whether sought in the artists鈥 immediate surroundings, foreign lands, or imaginary worlds.
