Aya Takano

23 Sep, 2010 - 14 Nov, 2010
The exhibition of Aya Takano in our museum gallery allows a view on the contemporary Japanese art scene of which the artist is one of the most successful artists internationally. Aya Takano was born in 1976 in Saitama close to Tokio, where she also grew up. Her large acrylic canvasses painted in manifold pastel shades, depict active female characters who seem at once beautiful, sensual, and strong, as well as fragile and vulnerable. Some people perceive her work as poetic, sensual and erotic, whereas others feel themselves immersed in a very joyous and comfortable world. These seemingly parallel worlds create a strong impact.

Her paintings, however, reflect foremost a very personnel universe: Aya Takano does not like to be tied down. "I want to fly. I want to go to the universe. I don't want to be in prison by morality. I want to live in my paintings."

Takano鈥檚 complex subject matters combine traditional and modern Japanese styles, among which the most important influences are manga (Japanese cartoons), science-fiction elements, and anime (all kind of animated movies).

鈥漌hen I get to a new place, entire collages emerge in my mind鈥, Takano says. 鈥淲hen I paint, I have the picture completely ready in my mind 鈥 I look at it, like a photograph, and paint it鈥. One of the most famous contemporary artists, Takashi Murakami discovered her and introduced Takano to international galleries. Today she is part of Murakami鈥檚 art production company Kaikai Kiki LLC, who supports and manages her.

Aya Takano has been chosen 鈥淪WR3 New Pop Artist 2010鈥, for which she created a magnificent design for the festival鈥檚 poster.
