Comb, Pastels and Buttermilk
The artist Willi Baumeister (1889–1955) also saw himself as a craftsman. He experimented with different materials and techniques: With a metal comb, he worked on the background of the picture or the surfaces of the so-called ridge-pull pictures. Black surfaces that already appeared in his early works were temporarily covered with buttermilk - this created a matt surface effect. Sand and putty characterize entire series of works.
Baumeister's rarely presented pastel drawings enter into dialogue with the sheets of his teacher Adolf Hölzel (1853–1934) and his student Fritz Seitz (1926–2017). The State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart, at which all three artists taught and / or studied, is involved in the exhibition with empirical studies of painting and material technology.
