Contemporary Cuban Art from the Collection

01 Feb, 2011 - 30 Apr, 2011
Opening in February 2011, 21c Museum will present an extensive exhibition of Cuban artists that seeks to explore three generations of Cuban art: artists living in Cuba, Cuban immigrants, and first-generation Cuban-Americans. Often referred to as the cultural capital of the Caribbean, Cuba has a long and rich history of art and culture and yet very little is known about Cuban art since 1950 in the United States.

The exhibition will include over 50 works from the 21c collection, the majority of which will be exhibited for the first time outside of Cuba, and will include all mediums (painting, photography, video and installation). Work from internationally acclaimed artists such as Sandra Ramos, Ren茅 Francisco, Rocio Garcia, Carlos Garaicoa, Ren茅 Pe帽, and Juan Roberto Diago will be shown alongside some of the most interesting young artists working in Cuba today such as Glenda Le贸n, Iv谩n Capote, and Yasser Pena. Cuban-American artists included in the exhibition will include, among others, Anthony Goicolea, Maria Magdalena Campos Pons and Guerra de la Paz.
