Crown Jewels: Best of British Contemporary

Feb 12, 2022 - Mar 05, 2022

Gormleys present an exhibition by a number of leading British artists from the past 50 years. Featured will be Banksy, Francis Bacon, Damien Hirst, David Hockney, Harland Miller, Patrick Hughes, Julian Opie & Grayson Perry.

Key pieces in the exhibition include Francis Bacon鈥檚 Tryptic (Sabatier 6; Tacou 22), an original etching from 1986-1987. Bacon was the master of the modern triptych, using the format to distil and tell a complex story in a bold way.

Banksy has three important works featured, Stop and Search (2007), illustrates a theme dear to Banksy: defiance towards authority and law enforcement, a topic he revisits in many of his works. Here Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) is shown having her wicker basket searched by a uniformed police officer in a satirical take on the controversial stop and search legislation first introduced by the UK government in the 80s. Also featured by Banksy is Monkey Queen, a provocative screen print created in 2003, depicting Queen Elizabeth as a monkey.

A number of Damien Hirst鈥檚 signature Butterfly works will be on display, including Big Love (2010) and Alter (2007). 鈥淚 love butterflies because when they are dead they look alive.鈥 Hirst has intensified his career-long fascination with the beauty, fragility and symbolism of butterflies to create a spectacular and multi-allusive evocation of mortality. His works constantly confronts the balances between life and death, vanity and transience.
