Daan den Houter: Ook MooI! / Also Nice!
In this new STRIPES series, the mahogany with its natural grain has completely disappeared from a number of the works; he continues the process of milling, filling, and polishing until it is visually filled. Whereas previously the mahogany forced him to make choices in relation to the hard plastic colours of the epoxy, in this series, he strives to minimise those choices. The result is a 鈥榩ainting-that-is-not-a-painting鈥; a work that exists within the medium. The image is created purely by carrying out the actions and eliminating the tiny 鈥榤istakes鈥 that constantly arise during the very laborious process. Each work is a celebration of colour and sometimes gives the impression of having been created using the Paint program on a PC. However, these works by Daan were not created by simply moving the cursor across the screen!
