Degas鈥檚 Drinker: portraits by Marcellin Desboutin

19 Sep, 2017 - 25 Feb, 2018

Edgar Degas鈥檚 famous painting In a Caf茅 (L鈥橝bsinthe, 1875-6), features a dissolute bearded man whom Degas modelled on his characterful friend and fellow artist Marcellin Desboutin (1832-1902). Both men shared a passion for printmaking and this exhibition explores the Museum鈥檚 rare collection of Desboutin鈥檚 sensitively executed prints in drypoint. Depicting friends and associates, many of whom frequented the Parisian caf茅s and salons, Desboutin鈥檚 portraits 鈥 some drawn from life, others from photographs 鈥 capture the likenesses of influential artists, writers, critics, musicians and socialites as well as children, his own family and the bohemian figure of the artist himself.
