Digital Story: We Need Narratives

Nov 22, 2022 - Dec 31, 2032

Through its open storage program, MMCA Cheongju allows visitors to experience the environment and facilities used in storing works of art. A museum uses the works in its collection for exhibition and education, but it also operates storage facilities that preserve the works as cultural heritage for future generations. Storage units are constructed to provide the ideal condition for preserving works - such as constant temperature and humidity - and always belong to a museum’s restricted areas. However, as MMCA’s collection grew in size, the demand to present works to the public went beyond its exhibition halls and expanded to its storage facilities.

Centering on works that belong to the MMCA’s Government Art Bank collection, MMCA Cheongju’s Floor 3 Open Storage has introduced various artists and contemporary art schools to the public. In Digital Story: We Need Narratives, the museum focused on works of photography, video, and installation to observe how these mediums narrate stories differently from painting and sculpture, aiming to comprehend their characteristics and emphasis as major branches of contemporary art.

The exhibition was themed into three parts to allow visitors experience the diverse range of digitalized contemporary storytelling methods adapting mediums such as video and installation. Indulging in a variety of works that feature video, voice, sound, text, animation, and photography produced by digital software, visitors will be able to imagine the artists’ stories permeating through their works.
