Freedom is Recognized necessity
Freedom is Recognized Necessity sheds light upon an exceptional chapter in the collection history of the Stedelijk Museum. The show features art produced in the former Soviet Republics, which was acquired after the end of the Cold War.
In a tour through the exhibition, Hripsimé Visser will discuss how it addresses a remarkable aspect of the Stedelijk Museum’s collection history. Since the early nineties contemporary art from the former ‘Eastern Bloc' was a focal point for several exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum, followed by purchases and donations. Recurrent themes in these art works are reflections on the political situation and references to early 20th-century art, as well as a suggestive use of symbolism and of performance-related strategies.
