Glimpses. Views. Impressions.: Masterworks of French Impressionism

May 13, 2016 - Nov 13, 2016
Light and shade are the key concepts of Impressionism. Line recedes behind colour. Bright, vivid hues applied with flowing brushstrokes distinguish masterpieces such as Claude Monet鈥檚 Fields in the Spring or Auguste Renoir鈥檚 By the Fireside. Combining masterpieces of painting and sculpture with outstanding works on paper from the Staatsgalerie holdings, the exhibition will provide a remarkably self-contained overview of the epoch. Edgar Degas鈥檚 After the Bath, Woman Drying Herself, only rarely placed on display, is considered one of his most important pastels. The show will be divided into sections devoted to the classical genres of landscape, portrait, interior, nude and still life, and thus allow new forms of encounter that offer a new way of looking at the well-known works. Drawings by Vincent van Gogh and rarely exhibited paintings by his friend Armand Guillaumin will mark the end of the epoch. Paul Gauguin and Odilon Redon developed the Impressionist painting style further, creating paintings and works on paper that will transport the viewer into exotic and visionary worlds.
