The spirit of the hustle has become an unofficial rallying cry for Detroit. Historically, the city has symbolized both the American dream and blue collar grit, developing a reputation for the resilience and determination of its people in the face of everything from the Rebellion of 1967 to auto industry job losses, corruption, inefficient services, economic recession, water shut offs, and the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. Arts, music, entrepreneurship, and activism are just a few of the ways that Detroit鈥檚 people have broadcast their hustle with ingenuity, yearning, and pride.

There are as many different dreams as there are people, and every one of them is a unique story of hustle. What do you need to sustain yourself? What do you most desire? What gets you out of bed in the morning? What keeps you up at night? What does hustle mean to you? 

All forms of hustle involve art, science, or a combination of both. HUSTLE is a multimedia exhibition of interactive works and participatory experiences that examine the many definitions of survival and success. Central to the gallery is 鈥淭he Hustler鈥檚 Lounge,鈥� a space where Detroiters and visitors can sound off, weigh in, and share their own notions of hustle. A public performance series featuring artists, scientists, makers, artisans, and hustlers from the community will run throughout the course of the exhibition.
