Ileana Sonnabend and Arte Povera
The genesis of the Arte Povera movement is, in many ways, inseparable from the history of Ileana Sonnabend鈥檚 legendary gallery. In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the movement鈥檚 inception, Ileana Sonnabend and Arte Povera will open at L茅vy Gorvy鈥檚 New York location on November 2nd and will run through December 23rd. Curated by the renowned art historian and Arte Povera forefather Germano Celant, this exhibition is the first to investigate Ileana Sonnabend鈥檚 central role in the international reception of Arte Povera, and the close friendship between Celant and Sonnabend that grew out of their shared interest in the Italian artists.
The exhibition will include works by Giovanni Anselmo, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Giulio Paolini, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and Gilberto Zorio鈥攎ost of which were originally displayed at Sonnabend鈥檚 New York or Paris galleries.
