In Around Beyond

10 Nov, 2017 - 03 Feb, 2018
San Francisco Art Institute鈥檚 new campus at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area marks a significant shift in the public realm for SFAI. This site is the largest effort by SFAI since the opening of its landmark Paffard Keatinge-Clay building at the historic Russian Hill campus in 1969. Positioned literally at the edge of the city, within the United States鈥 most-visited National Park, SFAI鈥檚 residencies, exhibitions, and events will give life and energy to a site that originally served as the embarkation point for WWII鈥檚 Pacific theater.

To open the building and share this space with the public, over the next year SFAI is commissioning artists to unveil new works in, around, and beyond the building. The inaugural exhibition and public commissions advocates for the potent, mercurial, and instrumental roles that artists play within public life and highlights SFAI alumni, faculty, and affiliated artists who have contributed to the historically charged dynamic between artists, SFAI, and the public realm. At this moment that SFAI is radically shifting its own presence within the city, this and future exhibitions will question and expand the agency of artists beyond the gallery.
