'BIG PICTURES' presents large, wall-based works made of glazed ceramic tiles, which are best described as "paintings". The subjects in the exhibition are typical of
Jesse Wine鈥檚 recent oeuvre: self-reflexive and contemplative of the quotidian occurrences and objects that affect his existence. The rich variety of styles and finishes within the exhibition expose Jesse鈥檚 similarly diverse sources of inspiration and flatten hierarchical distinctions between high and low cultural references. A section of his bedroom floor painted with vibrant household paints, its domesticity accentuated, is juxtaposed with an ornate Japanese gilded panel, an exaggerated archetype of the craftsmanship he reveres. In 'Still. Life.' Jesse's studio mug of choice, a freebie from the omnipresent British store sportsdirect.com, infiltrates a Giorgio Morandi still life. Jesse鈥檚 hubristic appropriation of art historical high culture is a tongue-in-cheek expression of admiration; he is sincere in both his parody and his homage.
