Jonathan Retallick: Reflection
Drawing inspiration from the turbulent weather and landscape of Ynys M么n, Jonathan Retallick (b.1996) channels the more challenging experiences and emotions of life into paintings that resonate with them at that moment in time. In 2018, they began experimenting with innovative ways of applying and moving fluid oil paint in a controlled yet somewhat spontaneous manner. Over the years, their process evolved, incorporating handcrafted drawing tools and implements that challenge their control and movement of paint.
By building up and removing layers of paint, they have developed an idiosyncratic method of painting, resulting in images that appear organically formed and almost photographic in aesthetic. By intentionally controlling visual noise within each painting, the artist seeks to provide an open platform that fosters a dynamic interaction between the viewer and the image, offering a space for reflection and individual interpretation.
