Julie B茅langer: Crossing the Void (Whispers of Tao)

09 Nov, 2023 - 25 Nov, 2023

Julie B茅langer explores the influence of location and territory on the imagination. Her artistic practice is characterized by a playful and intuitive approach rooted in experiential exploration, drawing inspiration from the material itself. Her attention to the environment, guided by ecological concerns, reflecting a heightened awareness of her surroundings. Graduate of the master鈥檚 in visual and media arts at Universit茅 du Qu茅bec 脿 Montr茅al in 2018, she is currently presenting her doctoral exhibition at the Laroche/Joncas gallery. This exhibition is the culmination of four years of research-creation in the doctoral program in Arts studies and practices at UQAM. B茅langer views artistic activity as a form of resistance against capitalism, consumerism, and the attention economy (Citton, 2014). This perspective is grounded in a practice of mindful attention, seeking to revalorize sensitivity to the living world. Her approach, driven by spontaneity and chance, is also inspired by Taoist concepts such as impermanence, non-action, non-knowledge, non-desire, and emptiness.

Her artworks take the form of representative abstractions reminiscent of fauna or flora, showcasing the various traces left from the creative process. Employing techniques like imprinting, washing, or subtraction, Julie B茅langer improvises with materials, occasionally incorporating organic elements into her compositions. These additions serve to imprint their otherness onto her canvas. Her most recent solo exhibitions were presented at Belgo, at Popop Gallery (2019), and at the Centre des arts actuels Skol (2023).
