Leon Golub: Historical Witness

16 Jan, 2010 - 05 Sep, 2010
Considered the great narrator of post-World War II American history, Leon Golub (1922-2004) was an artist of uncompromising intellectual honesty and formal consistency. From 1976 to 1979, Golub undertook a consideration of the 鈥渇ace of power鈥 and created more than 100 portraits of male power figures鈥攑olitical and religious figures of all persuasions鈥攃ulled from photographs in newspapers and weekly magazines of the day. Seeking to demystify the use of power through the depiction of the faces of the men who were shaping the news, Golub reveals linkages between identity and masculinity, power and dominance, in these portraits of the individuals from different times in their lives. These portraits led Golub to the creation of his Mercenaries Series, which explored his response to the conflicts in Central America and Africa in the 1980s. The first work in this important series is showcased in the exhibition with the portraits.

Organized by the Portland Art Museum, the exhibition has been curated by Bruce Guenther, chief curator and curator of modern and contemporary art.
