Motionless, I Stay and Go: I am a Pause
In Angel鈥檚 exhibition, human and animal subjects dominate the frame and space of the canvas with a pulsing energy. Exaggerated proportions and radiating contours accentuate the musculature, maleness, and motion of the athletes and their equine counterparts. A rich and expressive range of brushstrokes further enliven the subjects. Felix renders horses in both a lifelike and exalted way, magnifying the strength and vitality of the large creatures, sometimes dwarfing their riders. Poetic portraits of baseball players lend a more contemplative element to the exhibition, trading action for moments of repose.
Marta Gutierrez is inspired by both the cultural and natural landscape of her native Colombia. Her work derives from both oral and visual memories, including folklore, poetry, and el mercado of where she grew up. Jaime Jaramillo Escobar鈥檚 poem Alhe帽a y Az煤mbar serves as the artistic influence of Gutierrez鈥檚 work featured in the exhibition. Central to her childhood was the marketplace and its unusual and exotic fruits and vegetables, each with its own mythology. Though her drawings and paintings often appear as naive and whimsical, they offer an allegorical and magical interpretation of the artist鈥檚 culture.
