O Meio 茅 a Massagem

30 Jan, 2024 - 02 Mar, 2024

"The medium is the massage" or "the medium is the message"? The title of this exhibition comes from an anecdote, not so old, that still reverberates in our time, going back to when, in 1967, Marshall McLuhan (Canadian communicator and philosopher) published the book "The Medium is the Massage", an argument about technological means and their determination in the informational process. The dubiousness of the book's title became the subject of widespread speculation, given theni doubt as to whether the change from "message" to "massage" in the first printed edition had been deliberate or accidental. What is known is that the title has remained a "massage" and, curiosities aside, its content continues to be entirely refreshing, reverberating in conceptual discussions - as in this show. Regarding the medium, we have its contemporary integration into media language. However, the term has become well established as a synonym for "plastic platforms" in the field of visual arts, referring to the various possible techniques and materialities, projecting artistic visual decisions and their perceptions. In the juxtaposition of medium, we are faced with the unrestricted gracefulness of the many possibilities for mixing, remixing and apposition, eschewing determination in the direction of material experimentation.

In the show, we examine the dialog between emerging names on the current contemporary scene and well-known contemporary and modern artists who have established careers. In these medium-massages, there is an entanglement between the works, a process of contagion between the artists, who, in such an insightful way, manage to absorb themselves in the experimentation of languages. Not satisfied with the limitations of the medium specifications, we contemplate the varied visual thinking that amalgamates in the exhibition space.
