OWL5: Tracing Traces
In this exhibition, for the fifth time Marta Herford is dedicating a show to artists with links to the East-Westphalia Lippe region. Once again, the highly diverse potential emerges of combining regional influences and an artistic approach that goes far beyond those boundaries.
To leave traces, to follow them or blur them: People, and likewise things leave traces at places that invariably become inscribed into those locations. As relics of their time beneath the surface or as spontaneous and manifest markings 鈥 they tell stories, the stories of how the arose, of their identity, of the familiar and the strange. Similarly, places also shape the things and people that are located there, that live there.
The artists in the exhibition rely on very different media such as painting, photography, installations, sculpture and video when exploring such traces. They start tracking not just real but likewise immaterial spaces, spaces that only exist in our imagination, and explore the narratives associated with them. As only by experiencing the real can abstract spheres be tracked down and discovered.
