Oskar Kokoschka

11 Oct, 2011 - 15 Jan, 2012
Oskar Kokoschka, together with Egon Schiele, is regarded as main representative and founder of Austrian Expressionism. At a time when the Austrian art scene Oskar Kokoschka, Das M盲dchen Li und ich (Detail), aus: Die tr盲umenden Knaben 漏 Fondation Oskar Kokoschka/VBK, Wien, 2011was dominated by Gustav Klimt, Kokoschka was regarded as a revolutionary, enfant terrible and 鈥淥berwilding鈥, as he was referred to by Ludwig Hevesi, the leading art critic at that time. His many talents and versatility were evident not only in his paintings, drawings and graphic prints, but also in his stage works. His impressive literary 艙uvre, his poems, dramas, plays and narrations complement his pictorial 艙uvre and testify to the fact that he is the creator of expressionist poetry in Austria.

The comprehensive exhibition, displayed on two floors of the MdM RUPERTINUM, presents numerous graphics connected to Kokoschka鈥檚 expressionist poems. Excellent examples are the early pictorial fairytale The Dreaming Boys and his sensational poster for his own drama 鈥淢urderer, Hope of Women鈥, which freed him completely from the dominant influence of Secessionism in 1909. The Album The Dreaming Boys created by Kokoschka during his years of study at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, was commissioned by the Wiener Werkst盲tte, which published it in 1908. Kokoschka dedicated his first work in text and images to Gustav Klimt, whom  he greatly revered, out of gratitude for giving him the opportunity to present his work at the international art exhibition 鈥淲iener Internationale Kunstschau鈥漣n 1908.

The collection of the MdM SALZBURG includes nearly the complete graphic 艙uvre of Oskar Kokoschka.
