PIECESes and BOXESes
Project Network is unique amongst artist residencies as the creation of new artistic works is not the only the focus, there is a strong emphasis as well on networking and professional practice. We created an artistic community whose interaction and collaboration continues beyond our six weeks together at Guldagergaard.
An artist residency is about becoming uncomfortable颅颅, starting your studio practice in a new space, challenging and stretching your ideas about your techniques, subject matter, form, audience and collaboration, competing and learning from your fellow residents. BOXESes and PIECESes is an extension of our discomfort and exploration at Guldagergaard颅颅, It forces us to again expand our network, but this time into familiar communities.
This exhibition will be traveling 33,511 kilometers around the world, from Denmark to Germany, Poland to South Korea, The United States to Canada, Iceland to Sweden and then back to Denmark. Each networker will document their process of exhibiting the works, including finding space, promotion, fundraising for the shipping costs, and an opening reception on our website www.piecesesandboxeses.wordpress.com. This element of documentation and process is just as important as the pieces themselves as it represents our continued dialogue and gives voice to process of the project. The exchange of the shipping box between networkers involves not just the ten of us, but also thousands of miles traveled and engagement with numerous individuals at shipping companies and exhibition spaces. The objects function as calling cards and act as surrogates as they visit our fellow Networkers鈥 community; our pieces stand in place of us; communicating, laughing, divulging and working instead of us. They personify their artist.
The small works exhibited in PIECESes and BOXESes are each under 10 cm cubed. The display of these works will be as varied as the exhibition spaces they are shown in. What will remain consistent is the ten objects, each made from Royal Copenhagen Porcelain, as well as a hand drawn, black and white map of the world. Each of the ten participants collaborated by drawing their area of the world, as the exhibition travels its journey will be traced onto the map, giving context to the history of the pieces.
The packed and sealed box containing our ten art works was displayed during our exhibition World Cup, at the Applehouse Gallery in Sk忙lsk酶r, Denmark before beginning its journey. One year from our Project Network residency these well traveled pieces and the original shipping box will return to the Applehouse Gallery to be displayed, bearing the marks of their adventure around the world.
