Peter Bogardus is a photographer and book artist who works in New York City. His books are made by hand, employing photographic images printed from copper photogravure plates juxtaposed with text printed from metal type, or wood blocks, on paper from the U.S. and Japan. He is currently producing a book entitled BA SURI, whose subject is the Suri People living along the border between Ethiopian and Sudan. This endeavor is the outgrowth of a Guggenheim Fellowship. Bogardus鈥� interest in handmade books began at Hampshire College, where under the tutelage of Leonard Baskin he visited numerous libraries, most frequently the New York Academy of Medicine, to view the unparalleled collection of anatomical atlases showcasing the development of printing techniques from the 15th through 19th centuries. He endeavors to receive inspiration from Africa through the lens of a large-format camera, and of course from the resonance of human encounter, resulting in TOUBA NEW YORK, about Sufism from Senegal, SEVENTEEN TREES, taking notable trees as a springboard, and HULU SELAM, a trilogy about different aspects of spiritual life in Ethiopia, among others. His work has been exhibited at the Schomburg Center and the American Academy of Arts and Letters but resides primarily in the libraries鈥擭ew York Public, Columbia, Library of Congress, and the British Library, to name a few.
