A site of leisure, respite, luxury, and sport, the pool is an American icon of enjoyment, first popularized in pop art through a series of works by renowned pop artist David
Hockney. Referencing Hockney's LA/Palm Springs vibe that influenced a generation of artists, the pool- as metaphor- has served as an enigmatic symbol of the American Dream that reflects social status, affluence, and play. This thematic exhibition is timely and resonates with increased interests in high society, socialization, the party alongside darker notions not part of the American utopian desire such as loneliness, racism, class, and isolation. With over a dozen nationally recognized artists, this exhibition spans the 1960s to the current day as artists continue to employ the pool as a site to explore leisure, play, society, and the economy often across race, power, and equity.
