The exhibition Fulgurance d鈥檜ne trajectoire presents some ten works by Rita Letendre from the 1970s, a seminal period in her career. The murals she created during that time for public spaces in many North American cities鈥攆rom Toronto to Long Beach鈥攕hone out like powerful beams of light, their vibrant energy expressing the prevailing optimism proper to the progressive spirit of a generation responsible for major social advances. The paintings simultaneously produced by the artist, who was born in 1928, offer the same experience. Just as in her monumental works, arrows are a recurring motif, standing out in contrast with darker backgrounds. The swaths of spectral colours so typical of Rita Letendre鈥檚 work also make an appearance, precisely delineated in a hard-edge manner or blending into one another through spray painting. Composed along diagonals, certain of these dynamic paintings show a vanishing point, a forward-looking perspective. Fulgurance d鈥檜ne trajectoire provides a unique opportunity to become immersed in the ever-captivating Modernist aesthetic characteristic of the era.
