The National Gallery of Canada is the Canada鈥檚 finest art museum and the permanent home of the world鈥檚 most comprehensive collection of Canadian art. Founded in 1880, the National Gallery moved in 1988 to its present location in a magnificent building designed by award-winning architect Moshe Safdie. International collections include European and American art, with painting and sculpture from the Middle Ages to the present. Visitors may view masterpieces by such artists as the Group of Seven, Emily Carr, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Alex Colville, as well as Rembrandt, Canaletto, Monet, van Gogh and Picasso. An ambitious program of special exhibitions, organized by the Gallery and in collaboration with the world鈥檚 great museums, has mounted major retrospectives on the work of Degas, Karsh, Renoir, Corot, Picasso and Betty Goodwin, to name a few.
