SKYWAY: A Contemporary Collaboration
Skyway: A Contemporary Collaboration celebrates artistic practice in the Tampa Bay area through the exhibition of artwork produced across four counties by a wide range of artists. In collaboration with The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota and the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, the Tampa Museum of Art provides a setting for the viewing and enjoyment of art. Museums also function as safe spaces for the contemplation and discussion of current issues important to society. We maintain a dedication to artists鈥 rights of free expression, while also understanding the deep subjectivity that is involved in the appreciation of art. Contemporary art enables creative, thought-provoking engagement with the issues of our time.
For this exhibition, six curators, including guest juror Diana Nawi of the P茅rez Art Museum Miami, worked diligently to review nearly 300 submissions that included artist statements, CVs, and images. Curators from the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, and the Tampa Museum of Art reviewed submissions online and then met in person for two rounds of jurying and discussion. After reviewing the selections of the guest juror, the curators made final selections over phone conferencing.
The 57 artists represented in Skyway reflect the diversity of art being made in the Tampa Bay area. Each of the exhibited artists stood out to the curatorial team based on a variety of factors and criteria: strong, clear artist statements; unique uses of materials; engaging subject matter and conceptual vision; and highly developed aesthetic decisions. We hope that our visitors will come away from the exhibition inspired and impressed by the artwork created all around us.
