See The Forest For The Trees

04 Jul, 2019 - 18 Aug, 2019
The Monterey Peninsula is home to great natural beauty and unique flora like the Monterey Cypress and Monterey Pine. They have been the subject and inspiration for artists and visitors to the area for over a century, and are well-represented in the Museum鈥檚 collection by such iconic images as Francis McComas鈥檚 Cypress, Monterey, and William Ritchshel鈥檚 Centurions of the Sea. But there are other aspects of the Museum鈥檚 collection of California Art that represent trees in different styles, guises and contexts, in various media, as both subjects and metaphors, and invite us to view them with fresh eyes. This exhibition will bring together a mixture of works not ordinarily seen together, including Andrew Schoultz鈥檚 Meditations under Stress (10 Shamans, Horizon Looming), Eyvind Earle鈥檚 California Hills, Emile Norman鈥檚 Tree of Life, Ferdinand Burgdorff鈥檚 Blue Smoke Tree, Salton Sea Area, and Cole Weston鈥檚 Bristle Cone Pines, among others.
