Simone Brewster: Imperfect

17 Sep, 2025 - 30 Sep, 2025

'Imperfect' is a solo exhibition by Simone Brewster, presenting a new series of paintings for 2025. Brewster steps away from looser abstraction and seeks a 'perfect imperfect' through the use of a new medium - mixed media collage.

The discomfort, attraction or familiarity we often feel toward certain shapes, bodies, and forms - whether due to their size, texture, colour or irregularity is central to Brewster's practice. The multi-disciplinary artist and designer challenges us to find comfort in the fragmented, the imperfect, the unfinished, and the uncelebrated. The bodily forms she reconfigures on the canvas invite us to go beyond our discomforts and prejudice. By removing standard figurative depictions of the body through the subversion and abstraction of its appearance, we鈥檙e offered a new way of appreciating and understanding our own bodies - exempt from predisposition and familiarity.

Within Imperfect, Brewster dismembers bodily shapes and forms - collaging them into abstracted, bodily tapestries. These works question our familiarity with the body - removing the often-sexualised, figurative, and manufactured societal ideals. In its place we are invited to view Brewster鈥檚 compositions, expressed in the form of mixed media collage, oil pastel and acrylic on canvas. These works live within the wider dialogue of Brewster's three dimensional practice, in which she has been exploring similar themes for over two decades.

Brewster鈥檚 body of work has long questioned how we perceive the body - not just in the literal sense, but in the emotional, psychological, and cultural frameworks that shape our identity. Her practice spans both two dimensional and three dimensional disciplines, with works garnering international recognition, including headline commissions for the London Design Festival, acquisitions by the Smithsonian Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum, and being dubbed a 鈥榟ands on maker鈥 by The NY Times. Yet in this new body of work, she shifts from the elegant, smooth abstractions of the past to a more intimate confrontation with the body鈥檚 true nature - raw, disjointed, and beautiful in its imperfection.

By embracing this, Brewster redefines imperfection not as something to be hidden or corrected, but as integral parts of a larger, more complex beauty - growth. Imperfect challenges us to reconsider what makes something truly "whole," asking us to question the value of our flaws, our fragments, and our vulnerabilities so that we understand how perfect we are.
