Sopheap Pich: In the Presence Of
鈥淚n the Presence Of鈥 presents four key artworks, all on loan to Mia, by the renowned Cambodian-born artist Sopheap Pich. Buddha 3 (2010), Caged Heart (2009), Upstream 2 (2011), and Rang Phnom Flower (2015) evoke key moments in Pich鈥檚 practice and his engagement with Cambodian culture, history, and nature.
The artist transforms rattan, bamboo, and burlap into arduously made, yet delicate sculptures that gesture to, rather than replicate, his chosen subjects. His embrace of these natural materials alludes to Cambodia鈥檚 recent histories, through his childhood memories there, as well as his eventual return as an adult.
