The Figure and Dr Freud

Jul 08, 2009 - Aug 22, 2009
Haunch of Venison New York will present 'The Figure and Dr Freud' from July 8-August 22. This group exhibition features portraiture and figurative works by 31 artists spanning the last century, including Brian Alfred, Nobuyoshi Araki, Diane Arbus, Francis Bacon, Cecily Brown, Richard Butler, Chuck Close, George Condo, John Currin, Martin Eder, Alberto Giacometti, Kevin Francis Gray, Naoto Kawahara, Willem de Kooning, Robert Lazzarini, David Levinthal, Robert Mapplethorpe, Tony Matelli, Jonathan Meese, Wangechi Mutu, Alice Neel, Francis Picabia, Pablo Picasso, Patricia Piccinini, Mel Ramos, Daniel Richter, James Rosenquist, David Salle, George Segal, Tom Wesselmann, and Steve Wols. This exhibition focuses on the psychological theories developed by Sigmund Freud as a critical lens through which to observe the inner psyches of both artist and subject. Freud's principles of Psychoanalysis created a language to explore the subconscious mind and sexual desire, which was believed to be the critical part of human motivation. By encouraging self-discovery through the exploration of the psyche, Freud provided us a new model to interpret our perceptions and interactions we have with the world around us. This rich rubric of interpretation is of paramount importance to 'The Figure and Dr Freud', as it allows the observer of these portraits to enter into the psychoanalytic dialogue between the artist and subject, as well as the artist and their own inner mind.
