The Great World Theatre: 90 Years of the Salzburg Festival

An encyclopaedic exhibition of the history of the Salzburg Festival has been organized to commemorate the 90th anniversary. 鈥滱ll the town is a stage鈥 is the motto of an exhibition at the MdM RUPERTINUM, which features models of stage designs created by renowned visual artists for various productions of the
Salzburg Festival.

The presentation starts with the stage design created by the French artist Jean Paul Chambas for the play 鈥溍渂er die D枚rfer鈥 by Peter Handke, which had its world premiere at the Felsenreitschule in 1982, followed by the stage design for this year鈥檚 productions of Wolfgang Riehm鈥榮 鈥淒ionysos鈥, created by Jonathan Meese, and Alban Berg鈥檚 鈥淟ulu鈥, created by Daniel Richter. The exhibition also presents models of stage designs by J枚rg Immendorff, Alfred Hrdlicka and numerous photographs of Salzburg Festival productions.

The Salzburg Festival had hesitated a long time about cooperating with contemporary visual artists, before Oskar Kokoschka created stage design and costumes for the 1955 production of Mozart鈥檚 鈥淭he Magic Flute鈥. The next cooperation followed ten years later in 1965 鈥 this time with the Austrian sculptor Fritz Wotruba. When the era of Herbert von Karajan came to an end in 1990, the Salzburg Festival opened a new chapter with the appointment of the Belgian Gerard Mortier as artistic director. Robert Wilson, Eduardo Arroyo and Roberto Longo set new standards and added a new visual dimension to the audience鈥榮 listening experience. Since then all artistic directors have followed Mortier鈥榮 approach of cooperating with professional stage designers and visual artist
