Tiny Treasures

07 Jul, 2016 - 01 Sep, 2016

On July 7 Nancy Hoffman Gallery opens a show of Tiny Treasures, works by gallery artists measuring no more than 12 inches, a fresh and refreshing array of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video and sculpture.  During the art season much is on view of heraldic scale that takes attention away from works of intimate nature.  NHG鈥檚 summer show provides a platform for tiny works to shine and hold their own.  Tiny Treasures continues through September 1.

Several artists have created works especially for the show, including Linda Allen鈥檚 new series of multi-media paintings entitled 鈥淪upernatura,鈥 built of thin acrylic transfer layers, ink film and other media on wood panels, measuring 5.5 inches square x 4 inches deep, hybrids of painting and drawing.  She constructs and deconstructs an invented 鈥渟cape.鈥  Jesse Small鈥檚 new stainless steel sculptural screen, entitled MINI, measuring 8 x 11 x 6 inches, has the majesty and grace of a large folding screen in its small size.  The steel is bent and hand-cut and with its folds casts shapes and shadows around it.  Mark Calderon鈥檚 tiny frog, SCOUT, is 1 x 3 x 3 录 inches of patinated cast bronze, an icon of a little creature with large eyes.  The frog鈥檚 eyes appear to gaze at the viewer as the viewer gazes at this creature of myth and fairy tales.
