Inspired Storytelling: Tomengo鈥檚 Maitland Project

A&H鈥檚 former Artist-in-Action Trent Tomengo presents 鈥楾he Maitland Project鈥 a series of oil paintings inspired by photographs, artifacts and profiles of working-class residents of Maitland and its surroundings from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Tomengo was particularly inspired by Maitland鈥檚 history in relation to the neighboring Town of Eatonville after starting his residency as an A&H Artist-in-Action. This exhibition will feature twenty paintings of people who lived in this area in the late 1800s and early 1900s as representative of the working class that helped build cities and towns across the U.S.

The African American Narrative (Selected works from the Polk Museum of Art)

An exhibition recognizing noted contemporary African American artists from the permanent collection of the Polk Museum in Lakeland working in the narrative tradition addressing personal and historical themes. Artworks will include Faith Ringgold, Radcliffe Bailey, Howardena Pindell and Lorna Simpson. The Polk Museum of Art鈥檚 collection began in 1983 and has increased to include works by nationally and internationally recognized artists.

Artist Faith Ringgold (b. 1930) is recognized as one of America鈥檚 leading storytellers and is best known for her painted 鈥榮tory鈥 quilts in which she draws on African American folklore for inspiration. Radcliffe Bailey (b. 1968) Atlanta based artist Radcliffe Bailey is known for art that incorporates objects and themes from his family鈥檚 history, memory and the American journey. Howardena Pindell (b.1943) often addresses themes of racism, feminism, slavery and violence through the use of unconventional materials and paint. Lorna Simpson (b. 1960) explores race, gender and African American identity through the use of multimedia 鈥 photography and video.
